A group portrait and a self-reflection, written when the poet was of the age described.

          The Vanity of Young Men

Theirs is a casual grace. A cigarette
held loosely in the fingertips,
shirt sleeves folded above the wrist.
They have the poise of polished fruit.

No less conspicuous in a crowd,
their carriage suggests self confidence
and a potential for greater things.
People often stop them for directions.

What makes them so attractive
is the keenness of their minds. To them
the sound of one hand clapping is half
the sound of two. They never question

the question. It is pleasant to be among
their company. Watch them shaking hands
or throwing a football. You would
like to sit with them for a cup of coffee.

The poem, originally conceived as the choreography for a mime performance,  is interpreted by a dancer and cinematographer while the poet reads aloud.

   Poem in Mime

       A hammer  poised
     in a spot of light
     it strikes a bell
     the room grows bright

A human ball lies center stage
showing how its spine can bend
then struggling from its floating age
the head squirms free and legs extend

A tissue swath of onion skin
falls from its face and grasping hands
the bones are firm that shape its chin
on trembling limbs he stands

His open mouth cannot tell
the wonders that his eyes confirm
the muscles of his shoulders swell
hair grows on his cheeks and groin

Yet longing is his only strength
the living spark that he will keep
in the shudder of his spinal length
conceives himself in a blinding leap

Which leaves him trembling in the air
like a kite whose string has just been cut
descending with a blissful stare
to land on toe point, toe, and foot

But now his lustrous eyes are dim
his weight is all his legs can hold
a bald pate where his hair has been
and trembling seizes him like cold

He forms an ear cup with his hand
and squints to see the voice that calls
no longer has the strength to stand
he must lie down before he falls

His spine is stiff from end to end
his movements wrapped in onion skin
dry tissue walls that do not bend
till head drops down and legs draw in

      A hammer poised
     where light is stark
     it strikes a bell
     the room goes dark
